 Prof. Blase Scarnati
“Global/Local Curricular Initiatives and Institutional Change”
Thursday April 25th 11am, Avery 201

Blase Scarnati is a nationally renowned expert of “global/local” curricular initiatives. He is the director of First Year and Global Learning at Northern Arizona University and the founding director of the university’s First Year Seminar Program. Each year approximately 550 First Year Seminar students also pursue civic agency/community engagement work through an action research team (ART) model that focuses on work with community partners on long-term issues identified by the community. In January 2012 these efforts were featured at an event at the White House hosted by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Prof. Scarnati also coordinates implementation of NAU’s Global Learning Initiative through which 80% of undergraduate programs at NAU to date have developed program learning outcomes on sustainability, diversity education, and global engagement.

Prof. Scarnati has served as the elected president of NAU’s Faculty Senate, chair of the School of Music, and the associate chair of NAU’s Environmental Caucus. He is an associate professor of musicology at NAU.
