In Breaking Through the Spiral Ceiling, Laura Hoopes will talk about her life in science and read from her forthcoming book, Breaking Through the Spiral Ceiling: An American Woman Becomes a DNA Scientist, to be released May 2, 2011. She will discuss how she was recruited to science by Sputnik, fell in love with DNA in Woods Hole, developed as a scientist at Goucher College and Yale University, did postdoctoral research in La Jolla and Denver, and began her career in academia at Occidental College, crashing into gender-barriers all along the path. Later, she came to Pomona College as academic VP and then stepped down to the faculty in biology. Hoopes will talk about how she balanced career and family. Laura was married twice and had two children who are now grown up. Meanwhile, she received over two million dollars in federal and foundation funding to support her research with undergraduate students. Laura Hoopes is now taking an MFA in Creative Writing in preparation for a new career after her retirement.
