Fall 2012

September 28: Brainstorming and Critical Thinking
Do you have a difficult time facing the blank page or coming up with an interesting argument? This workshop will focus on several “motivating moves” that can give you a head start in writing more meaningful essays.

October 12: Crafting Effective Thesis Statements
Why can thesis statements be so difficult to write? This workshop reviews numerous examples of thesis statements, highlighting why some are more effective than others. You will then receive guidance and feedback on crafting your own arguments for current assignments.

November 9:  Body Shop: Making Body Paragraphs Flow
Do your paragraphs feel choppy? Do you ever struggle to avoid going off on tangents in your writing? This workshop will give you practice in writing body paragraphs that are fluid and coherent.

November 23: Integrating Sources
Do you ever find yourself “dropping” a quotation into a paragraph, hoping the reader will see how it relates to your argument? Do you have a difficult time paraphrasing or summarizing sources? If so, come to this workshop to learn about integrating quotations with effective signal phrases and expressing the ideas of others in your own words.

December 7: Citing Sources Using MLA & APA
What are the main differences between MLA and APA formats? What information should be included in a parenthetical citation? This workshop will answer questions about the latest MLA and APA guidelines, giving you practice citing various types of sources for your essays.

Spring 2013

February 1:  Writing Strategies for Senior Theses
How should I begin my senior thesis? This workshop will include strategies for creating timelines, organizing sources, and working with larger documents. Specifically, we will also discuss literature reviews, and approaches for organizing your project.

February 22: Writing Tips for ESL Students
ESL students face unique challenges in writing college essays, from decisions about appropriate verb tense and sentence structure to the use of prepositions and idiomatic expressions. This workshop provides helpful tips from a tutor with an extensive background in working with ESL students.

March 15: Reflection, Observation, and Response Papers
Reflection, observation, and response paper assignments often lack specific guidance on what you should address in the paper. This workshop will help you achieve an appropriate balance in these papers between personal insight and experience, on the one hand, and conceptual analysis, on the other.

April 5: Analyzing and Integrating Media Sources
Have you ever wanted to include a media component in a research paper but were unsure how to integrate it smoothly into your analysis? This workshop explores various techniques to analyze and integrate primary sources into a paper, with an emphasis on non-textual materials such as music, film, and art.

April 19: Citing Sources Using MLA & APA

Writing Center workshops are designed to review specific core concepts and to help you gain confidence and familiarity with each stage of the writing process. The workshops are discussion based and include activities to help you practice and improve your writing.
